VimpelCom (NYSE: VIP) is a leading international provider of mobile telecommunications services in Russia and Kazakhstan with recently acquired operators in Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Georgia. The Company operates under the 'Beeline' brand in Russia and Kazakhstan. In addition, VimpelCom is continuing to use 'K-mobile' and 'EXCESS' brands in Kazakhstan.
VimpelCom is recognized for introducing two digital cellular communications standards in Russia. It built the first dual band GSM-900/1800 cellular network in Russia and leads the development and emergence of the mass consumer market for wireless telecommunications in Russia with prepaid products.
VimpelCom offers telecommunications airtime and value-added services through GSM and D-AMPS wireless networks, with around 99.6% of its subscribers using GSM. It provides interconnections with other fixed and mobile networks and access to roaming - all under contract and prepaid payment plans.
The VimpelCom Group's license portfolio covers approximately 237 million people. Geographically it covers 78 regions of Russia with 136.5 million people, representing 94% of Russia's population as well as the entire territories of Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Georgia.
As of June 30, 2006, VimpelCom's total number of subscribers was 50.8 million, with 46.9 million subscribers in Russia, 2.9 million subscribers in Kazakhstan, 0.6 million subscribers in Ukraine, more than 14.5 thousand subscribers in Tajikistan and 0.5 million subscribers in Uzbekistan. As of September 1, 2006, there were 51.9 million subscribers on VimpelCom's network including 4.4 million subscribers in the CIS outside of Russia.
VimpelCom was the first Russian company to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in November 1996. Its ADSs (American Depositary Shares) are traded under the symbol "VIP".
